Temper Tantrum Politics

On August 7, Obama cancelled a long-planned Moscow summit. He and Vladimir Putin planned meeting in early September.

A White House statement said in part:

“Following a careful review begun in July, we have reached the conclusion that there is not enough recent progress in our bilateral agenda with Russia to hold a US-Russia Summit in early September.”

This comment and others ring hollow. Washington demands subservience. It wants things its way. Bullying substitutes for responsible bilateral relations.

Before one can begin to explore the Bible vs. Myth, one must define what a myth is, for the purpose of the study.

I’ve seen definitions used that say mythology is fiction, fables, lore, allegory, etc., but the fact we use the coinage, “mythology” tends to make it somewhat different than ordinary fiction and fables. Otherwise, why not call the stories of Venus and Zeus fiction?

The Christian unwritten definition, but defined by their usage of the word is that mythology is any religion other than their own. That’s rather a jaded application of the word, portraying bias, hindering any true study or research, voiding their search for truth.

As many are probably readily familiar with the Biblical creation myth I will begin by giving a detailed account of the Maya creation myth. There are many aspects of it which seem to mirror different aspects of the Bible and so I will do a side by side compassion of the all the elements which are similar to each other. IF we should name the most important factor in the changes which have gradually widened the contrast between modern science and the scholasticism of the Middle Ages, we might define it as a “progressive recognition of hereditary influences.”

There was a time when each individual of the human race was considered a separate accident, called into existence by an act of unlimited, arbitrary power, and apt to be as suddenly changed, even unto a complete inversion of his former moral being, by a merciful, or revengeful, caprice of the same power.

Biology has since taught us to apply the doctrine of evolution to the problems of our own moral and physical nature, to trace the tendencies of bygone times to their effects in the present age, to consider individuals the outcome of a long series of precedent influences, and to recognise the truth that the length of those influences is proportioned to the persistence of the result.
